Sophia Shuya Liu was born in Shanghai on October 10th, 2008. She moved to Japan with her parents when she was 2 years old, and now lives in Montreal. She is currently studying with Dang Thai Son.
She started to learn piano at age four and began participating in international competitions at age 5.
Afterwards, Sophia won multiple prizes in numerous contests:
Piano Contest of Kobe in Japan (1st prize), International Contest of Chinese Piano
Compositions in Hangzhou in China (1st prize), Canadian Music Contest (2nd prize)
Univertisity Concerto Contests in Canada at Mcgill (1st prize), Chopin International Contest of Hartford in the United-States (1st prize), as well as the International Piano Contest in Philadelphia.
In 2020, she became a semi finalist of the Gina Bachauer International Junior Piano Competition in the U.S as the youngest participant. In August 2022, she won the first prize in Category A of the 18th international Ettlingen Piano Contest in Germany.
In 2023, she won 1st prize at the Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition in the U.S, as well as the 2nd prize, the prize of the youngest semi finalist, and the public prize, during the first edition of the International Contest of Piano Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in Italy.
Sophia has given multiple recitals and concerts all around the world, notably in North America and South America, Asia and Europe. She shared the stage with famous pianists and has collaborated many times with symphony orchestras, including the Symphony Orchestra of Isle, the Tolima Music Festival Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Bazzini Consort Orchestra.
She has also participated in multiple music festivals at the highest level, such as the Philadelphia Young Pianists Academy (PYPA) festival, where she also gave recitals, as well as at the Tolima International Piano Festival in Columbia. During the opening ceremony this year, she played her rendition of Saint-Saens Concerto for piano no 2 with the local symphony orchestra, followed by a solo recital.
Sophia has participated in multiple masterclasses and has received advice from grand masters, notably, Gary Graffman, Lydia Artymiw, Meng-Chieh Lui, to name a few.
She has been presented in multiple medias, notably NBC, ABC News, Columbia National Television, and certain Polish and Italian journals. Sophia recently published her first album, which contains a recording of a competition in Europe.
In 2024, Sophia performed at the Chopin International Festival of Duszniki in Poland, as well as at the prestigious International Piano Festival of Roque Antheron in France, where, on top of a recital, she also played a concerto for three pianos by Mozart with Dang Thai Son, Eric Lu, and Sinfonia Varsovia. That same year, she played at multiple festivals and important events, including the International Festival “Chopin and His Europe” in Varsovie in Poland.
She also performs concerts in prestigious locations like Hyogo Prefectural Arts and Culture Center (Kobe, Japan), at the Taipei National Concert Hall, as well as the Opera of Hanoi.
