“Celebrating 20 years, this group has matured and deepened without losing its freshness and edge.”
The Globe and Mail (April 2009)
Established in 1989 and currently in residence at Stanford University, the St. Lawrence String Quartet has developed an undisputed reputation as a truly world class chamber ensemble. With its profound sense of communication, the evident joy their interpretations display and its solid teamwork, the St. Lawrence Quartet enchants and enthralls its listeners with dynamic and passionate performances. Revealing the wondrous nuances of an otherwise familiar repertoire while illuminating the works of the most talented composers of today, they open unsuspected musical horizons. The quartet’s outstanding performances have earned them distinguished accolades (a Juno Prize for its interpretation of Schumann’s string quartets, as well as a Grammy). This concert will be an opportunity to hear a work by American composer John Adams (born in 1947). A composer unanimously lauded by critics, it is Adam’s third work written specifically for this quartet. A unique experience that chamber music lovers will not want to miss!
Pianist Serhiy Salov, from Ukraine, debuted as a soloist at age 11 by performing Grieg’s Piano concerto with the Ukraine National Symphony Orchestra. Since his First prize at the Montreal International Music Competition in 2004, his career is on the rise. Recipient of international prizes, he has performed with world-class orchestras. His first recording (2007) garnered a Prix Opus. His most recent received unanimous praises thanks to his masterly transcription of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Combining a “prodigious clarity of playing and an overwhelming sonorous power” (La Presse), his technical mastery will not fail to seduce chamber music lovers.
